Research Fellow at Brunel University

Dr. Sotayo is a Research Fellow at Brunel University London.  He previously worked as a Researcher & Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, and currently works as a Research Fellow & Lecturer in Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) working towards Industry 4.0. This is part of a European Union project entitled SAM (Sector Skills Strategy in Additive Manufacturing. With a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Liverpool and a PhD in Engineering from Lancaster University, his research interests include Engineering Materials and Design, Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing), Recycling, Sustainability & Waste Management.

Course Description

The session will comprise interactive sessions on 3D Printing, including 3D printed materials and processes, highlighting innovation and technology, problem-solving techniques, and environmental considerations towards a sustainable future. In addition, there are different breakout activities embedDed in this session that encourage engagement, creativity, imagination and problem-solving from the attendees.

 

The session will cover: 

  • An overview of 3D Printing (including the “What” “Why” and “How” of 3D Printing)
  • How 3D Printing works and examples of different manufacturing processes
  • Materials used for 3D Printing 
  • Benefits of 3D Printing over traditional manufacturing processes
  • Different useful items that can be 3D Printed
  • How 3D Printing is solving a global problem (e.g. COVID19)
  • Provision of resources and platforms for accessing 3D models for making useful products 
  • How to design a 3D model using a computer software (short tutorial with a QnA session)
  • Practical demonstration of the process of designing an object with a software, video showing the 3D Printing process, and the final 3D Printed product (Idea to reality).
